Goodwill letters: asking a lender to remove a late payment
When a goodwill letter makes sense, what to write, and what to expect.
What it is
A goodwill letter asks a lender to remove an accurate late payment as a courtesy. It is different from a dispute, which is for information that is wrong.
When it can work
It works best for a single late payment on an account with an otherwise good history, especially if there was a clear reason, such as a hospital stay, and the account has been current since.
What to write
Be brief and honest: name the account, take responsibility, explain what happened, show your on-time record since, and politely ask whether they would update the payment. Do not threaten or claim it was an error if it was not.
What to expect
Lenders are not required to agree, and many have policies against it. If one says no, you can still let time and on-time payments reduce the impact.
