What is a "thin" credit file?
Why having too little credit history can be a problem, and the simplest ways to fix it.
What it means
A thin file has only a few accounts, or very little recent activity. Some people have no file at all and are called "credit invisible."
Why it matters
With too little history, a score may not be generated, or it may be lower or less stable. Lenders may ask for a co-signer, a deposit, or a higher rate.
Ways to thicken it
A secured card, a credit-builder loan, becoming an authorized user, or rent reporting can each add positive history.
Go slowly
Open one or two accounts and use them well rather than applying for many at once. Several months of on-time payments make a real difference.
