Pay for delete: what it is and the risks
Why collectors rarely agree to remove an accurate collection for payment, and what to do instead.
What it is
"Pay for delete" means offering to pay a collection if the collector agrees to remove it from your credit reports instead of marking it paid.
Why it rarely works
Collectors that report to the bureaus agree to report accurate information. Many have policies against deleting accurate accounts for payment, and they are not required to agree.
If you try it
Get any agreement in writing before you pay. A phone promise is hard to enforce. If a collector agrees in writing and does not follow through, keep the letter as proof.
Better options
If the collection is inaccurate, dispute it. If it is accurate, compare paying in full with settling, consider how newer scores ignore paid collections, and focus on on-time payments going forward.
