Someone else’s information on your report (mixed files)
How a bureau can mix your file with another person’s, the signs to look for, and how to fix it.
How it happens
A "mixed file" happens when a bureau combines information from two people, often family members with similar names (such as Jr. and Sr.) or people with similar Social Security numbers.
Signs to look for
Names, addresses, employers, or accounts you do not recognize, especially ones that belong to a relative or someone with a similar name.
How to fix it
Dispute each item that is not yours, including the wrong personal information, and send proof of your identity. Bureaus must follow reasonable procedures to ensure maximum possible accuracy under section 607(b) of the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
Check all three
A mixed file may appear at one bureau and not the others. Check every report, and recheck after the dispute to make sure the information does not come back.
