Credit protections for service members
Federal protections for active-duty military and their families, in plain English.
6% interest cap on older debts
Under the Servicemembers Civil Relief Act, debts taken on before active duty can be capped at 6% interest during service. Send the lender a written request with a copy of your orders.
36% cap on many new loans
The Military Lending Act generally limits many consumer loans to active-duty members and their dependents to a 36% military annual percentage rate.
Active duty alerts
You can place a free active duty alert on your credit file, which asks lenders to verify your identity before opening new credit. It lasts one year and can be renewed.
Free credit monitoring
Active-duty service members can get free credit monitoring from the three bureaus. Military legal assistance offices can also help with credit problems.
Free check-up. No account needed, and we don't save your report.
