How long do negative items stay on a credit report?

Most negative information has an expiration date. After it passes, it should come off your report on its own.

Late payments: 7 years from the late payment.

Collections and charge-offs: about 7 years from the date of first delinquency (plus 180 days).

Chapter 7 bankruptcy: 10 years from the filing date.

Chapter 13 bankruptcy: the bureaus generally remove it 7 years from filing.

Hard inquiries: generally about 2 years.

Civil judgments and tax liens: the three bureaus no longer include them on credit reports.

What if something is past its time?

If a negative item seems older than its limit, check the dates carefully, then dispute it with the bureau and include what shows its age.

What about positive accounts?

Accounts you paid as agreed can stay longer, and that's usually good for you. Closed accounts in good standing often stay for up to 10 years.
