FICO vs. VantageScore: what is the difference?
Why you have more than one credit score, and which one lenders are likely to use.
Two scoring companies
FICO and VantageScore both build credit scores from the same credit reports. Their main versions use a 300 to 850 range, but they weigh information a little differently.
Who uses which
FICO scores are used by most lenders, and mortgage lenders have long used specific older FICO versions. VantageScore is common in free credit apps, and mortgage rules have begun allowing VantageScore 4.0 for some loans.
Thin files
VantageScore can often score people with very little history. FICO generally needs at least one account open six months and one reported in the last six months.
What matters most
Both reward the same habits: paying on time, keeping card balances low, and keeping accurate reports. Do not worry if the numbers differ a little.
