Disputing online vs. by mail
The pros and cons of each way to dispute with the credit bureaus, and how to keep a record.
Online
Online disputes are fast and free. But forms can limit how much you explain or what you can attach, so read every screen and save a copy or screenshot of what you send.
By mail
A letter lets you explain the problem fully and enclose proof. Sending it by certified mail with a return receipt gives you a dated record that it was delivered.
The rules are the same
However you dispute, the bureau generally must investigate within 30 days and send you the results.
Keep everything
Save copies of your dispute, your proof, and every response. If you need to dispute again, your records show exactly what you sent and when.
