What credit score do you need for a car loan?
There is no single minimum, but your score changes your rate. How to get a better deal.
No single minimum
Auto lenders approve a wide range of scores. What changes is the interest rate: lower scores usually mean much higher rates and total cost.
Auto scores are different
Many auto lenders use industry-specific scores, such as FICO Auto Scores, which range from 250 to 900 and weigh past car loans more heavily.
Shop the loan first
Get preapproved by a bank or credit union before visiting the dealer, so you can compare offers. Rate shopping within a short window usually counts as one inquiry.
Lower the cost
A larger down payment, a shorter loan, or a co-signer can help. Be careful with high-rate "buy here, pay here" lots, and read the whole contract before you sign.
