Building credit after moving to the U.S.
Why your credit history usually does not follow you to the U.S., and how to start fresh.
Starting from zero
Credit history from another country generally does not transfer to U.S. credit reports, so most newcomers start with no U.S. credit file.
Your history may still help
Some U.S. card issuers and lenders use services that can review credit history from certain other countries. Ask whether a lender accepts it.
SSN or ITIN
Many lenders ask for a Social Security number, but some banks, credit unions, and card issuers accept an ITIN.
First steps
Open a bank account, then a secured card or credit-builder loan that reports to all three bureaus. Pay on time and keep balances low.
