How to build credit from scratch

No credit history yet? These are the most common ways to start, including options if you have an ITIN.

Start with one account

A secured credit card (you put down a deposit that becomes your limit) or a credit-builder loan (you make payments into savings and get the money at the end) are common first steps. Ask whether the company reports to all three bureaus.

Borrow some history

Becoming an authorized user on a trusted family member's card can add that card's history to your file, if the card company reports authorized users. Pick someone who pays on time and keeps balances low.

If you have an ITIN

Some banks, credit unions, and card companies accept an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) instead of a Social Security number. Ask before you apply.

Then keep it simple

Use a small part of your limit, pay on time every month, and give it time. A score usually appears after about six months of activity. Avoid applying for many accounts at once.
